Week of May 11-15, 2020
Grades: As you’re aware, students who are engaging in the content will not receive a lower grade than what they held at the school closure: Midterm 3. Your student’s MT3 grade can be found by going into Skyward, and looking for MT3. Quarter 3 grades may also be an accurate indicator and will be posted to report cards by May 18th. If you have questions about your grade, please reach out so we can clarify. Students who are NOT engaging in content can be given an incomplete, and will not earn credit for this Semester.
Engagement: We do not expect the work that students turn in during this time to be perfect, or that students will totally master all concepts; however, we are looking to ensure that the work is complete. Students who do not engage at all and/or do not turn in critical assignments during a unit will be given an incomplete at the end of Semester 2, regardless of their MT3 grade. Also, if a student is continuously turning in work that is unfinished, or does not meet the basic requirements, he or she could receive an incomplete.
The culminating essay will still be graded on the Humanities rubric, and students will still be able to get general feedback on where they are in their skill development, but they will not be receiving the fine-tuning level of feedback we would normally give. To ease the stress many students are feeling about their grade due to the short amount of time they were suggested to spend on this assignment, we are increasing the point values associated with each category.
100% - Meets Standard
80-90% - Approaches Standard
79% > Below Standard (grade depends on the paper being on-topic, and the student making a genuine effort).
We believe that by maintaining our rubric categories and raising the point values associated with these categories students will be able to get accurate feedback without being punished point-wise for the current situation.
Late Work: Finally, we want to encourage students by being flexible during this time. If you are feeling overwhelmed, or find yourself unable to make a due date please reach out and let us know that you need an extended due date. Any work that is turned in late without checking in with us will be given a no count grade in the grade book so the points don’t work for or against you. Keep in mind, turning in completed work is a requirement for engagement. Without any submitted, completed work, you are in danger of receiving an incomplete.

Period 7 Assignments here
Block 1/2:
This week, we will begin reading the novel Night, by Elie Wiesel. All of the activities will be focused on the novel but will lean on the SS content that you learned last Thursday and Friday. Every student should have picked up a copy of the book before school closed; however, if you do not have the book for whatever reason and cannot gain access to a copy of the book, check out these links to help you with finding an online version of Night.
You can also search for Night online. we do not have those specific sites’ copyright permission to post them here, but you’ll find it. Also, there are possible YouTube channels that have the audio version. Should you still have problems finding or accessing the novel, let us know.
Again, the schedule below is not a rigid schedule: students can compress work into a day or two; if one task doesn’t take a full 50 minutes, students can move on to the other task earlier and spend more time there. If students want to spend more than 50 minutes a day on our classes, you are welcome to do that. Keep in mind that these tasks should not take you more than 50 minutes each. If you find you are consistently going over the time and are unable to complete what you need to in the given time, please reach out so we are aware and can offer strategies for working more efficiently.
Office Hours
As we move into fully teaching LA/SS content, we will be offering virtual office hours twice a week, Monday from 1-2 PM and Friday from 10-11 AM, with both Ms. Hallberg and Ms. Nguyen present. We are also both available by email if you cannot (or do not wish to) attend our virtual office hours. We will reply within two business days. Please send all and any Humanities Block questions to both Ms. Nguyen and Ms. Hallberg (at the same time, just ONE email; do not copy and paste the email a second time). Emailing both of us at the same will get you the best answer more quickly.
Grades
Many have reached out about grades and for clarification how grading will work for this semester. We are still figuring this out with our department and admin. We should have a better understanding of grades/grading requirements by the end of this week. When we have more information, we will let you know immediately.
